about

"Sileni" are small statues found in ancient Greece. They depict pot-bellied and ugly smiling women, cast in clay. Hollow, they were used to hold either salt (of great value at the time) or other household treasures. This is the oldest song in the Trio Arjento playbook. Tom wrote the words during a grad school seminar on the Dialogic Imagination of Mikhail Bakhtin, way back in 1995. Tom and Marcy co-wrote the music that same weekend, and Jenny put a few minor tweaks to the structure about 14 years later.

lyrics

Sileni and the Smile

Sileni is sitting and looking out the window of the room
Where she’s been living; she’s been feeling all alone
One eye wanders to the clock
The other watches shadows emerging from, remerging with
The dark.

Sileni paints a smile on, makes it wide enough to swallow fear
Wide enough (almost) to swallow all the origins of fear.
She opens the door.
Outside it is cold, cold enough to make her shiver.
From a distance this could easily be mistaken
for laughter.

Sileni and the smile pass
From pool of light to pool of light;
There is freedom in all motion...
Even when it’s flight.

There is safety in numbers--Sileni is one.
But her smile is her second, it harbours a secret
Hints at a power much older than reason.

The eyes are a window but the smile is a mirror,
A magnet, a measuring stick
And a mantra.

Sileni is sitting and looking out the window of the room
Where she’s been living; she’s been feeling all alone
One eye wanders to the clock
The other watches shadows emerging from, remerging with
The dark.
